A Dead Lion

1-18-13

Ecclesiastes 9:4 tells us: “For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” Just because something is bigger that doesn’t make it better. Often times we think  many things are better because they are bigger. If a company is big we esteem it as a success, without taking into consideration how it achieved that success. We must realize and consider that  many companies that were big have gone bankrupt.  If a company remains small we often think that it’s going nowhere and we would be foolish to stay with it. Just because something is small it doesn’t mean that it is weak. Did you know that an ant can carry something that is ten to twenty times heavier than it is and carry it up a tree? This is about the same as a 100 pound person carrying a small car on their back while climbing a steep mountain. As I thought about this I began to think about how many times people choose to visit certain churches just because they were big. Now, I’m not knocking on big churches. Just because a church is big that doesn’t make it bad nor does it make it good. That goes the same for small churches. Just because a church is small that doesn’t mean that it’s faithful to God, nor does it mean that it’s unfaithful to God. How foolish of us to judge companies or churches based upon their size. When looking for a church to go to, don’t look for the biggest. Look for one that is living. Look for one that is faithful to proclaim the Living Word of God and is the pillar and ground of the truth. Look for one that exalts the Living Savior. Look for one that shows life because it is growing spiritually and becoming more like Jesus Christ. This could be a smaller church than what you have been looking for, or it could be a bigger one than what you expected. Remember our verse and seek to join yourself to a living church. “For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.”
