A Drop of a Bucket

I’m sure that most of us have heard of the phrase “a drop of a bucket”. We usually use this phrase to express how small something is. Sometimes we may compare our trials to someone else’s trials and say that our trials are a drop of a bucket compared to theirs. It’s certainly a phrase that gives a good word picture to express how tiny we think something is in comparison to something else. Have you ever wondered where this phrase came from? The first person that I can find that ever used this phrase was God. The Lord tells us in Isaiah 40:15, “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance.” The Lord is very distinctly and clearly letting us know that He is BIG! If we are not careful we can get caught up in all the fear that the media will incite within our hearts because of the trouble within all the nations. We are constantly hearing about the possibility of wars and of nations that are on the verge of obtaining massive weapons. I most certainly believe that those in power should seek to keep others safe by keeping these things in check. However, I know that the Lord does not want me to worry and to fret about it. He wants me to know that all the nations are small and that He is in control of all the affairs of men. A few verses earlier in Isaiah the Lord teaches us that He has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand. Our great God can hold all the waters of the earth in his hand! That makes the nations even smaller! They are… but a drop of a bucket!
