As I was reading in my devotions today I was reminded of an old saying that sometimes you would hear. When people would give some money or do a good deed sometimes they would say, “That’s bread on the water.” I read today in Ecclesiastes 11:1, “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.” What is this teaching us we may ask? Well, the teaching is pretty simple. When you give or do good unto others it will come back to you. Another verse in Ecclesiastes reads: “All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again” (1:7). When we give unto others it goes out and eventually comes back, just like the waters that run from the streams then into the lakes or seas. Those waters go back up into the heavens only to come back down again. So, the next time you have opportunity to be a blessing to someone by giving them help either by money or your time and effort, just say, “That’s bread on the water.” For God will not forget your work and labor of love.
