The Apostle Paul told Timothy that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (II Tim. 4:3-4). Without a doubt we can see that this time has come! Notice, in our verses above that it says that they will not endure “sound” doctrine. This word sound speaks of a type of doctrine that is healthy and free of error. It’s the teaching that is according to truth. People gather together in all kinds of places every week to hear someone that will not teach sound doctrine but rather tickle their ears with fables and stories. Paul tells Timothy in the verse just before those already mentioned: “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” Is the church that you go to faithful to preach the Word of God? Are you looking for a place that preaches the Word or are you more concerned about being entertained by a speaker? Many times in their search of a church, people don’t even consider if the Word of God is being preached. They are more concerned about how entertaining the preacher is, the style of music or the programs the church offers. “Behold the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD” (Amos 8:11). I thank God for those who are willing to hear, “thus saith the Lord.” Oh, for more that want to hear the Word of God!
