Trusting Your Heart

I’m sure that most of us have seen those scenes where someone is struggling with what they need to do and someone advises them to trust or follow their heart. In the shows it seems like they make the right choice. However, if we would hear what God has to say we would quickly see that this is not good advice. Proverbs 28:26 says, “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool.” We need to understand that our heart or innermost feelings can lead us in the wrong direction and cannot be trusted. God teaches us in Jeremiah 17:9 that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Your heart will lead you astray from what God would want you to do. We are born with hearts that are against God’s law and His nature of holiness. Until we are born again by the Spirit of God and are given a new heart (Ezek. 36:26) our heart will not seek to please the Lord. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 15 that from our heart proceeds evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, lies, stealing and blasphemy. Following your heart can mean committing murder, stealing or even adultery. I have heard people say that they know in their heart that God would want them to be happy and their happiness meant committing adultery and leaving their husband. God is never going to lead you away from following His Word. If trusting your heart and doing what makes you happy means going against what God teaches in His word then you my friend need a new heart. The Christian will never be happy and fulfilled while going against the Word of their Lord. You cannot trust your heart. Your heart must be led by the Word of God.
